COVID-19 Safety Considerations for Parents with Unvaccinated Children
The lifting of mask mandates across the nation and world has raised questions about what parents of unvaccinated children should do to help keep our younger population safe. Currently, the vaccine is only available to children over the age of 12, so what should be done to keep those younger children healthy?
Ben Weston, MD, MPH, associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), advises that young children will still be at risk of COVID-19 until there is a vaccine available for their age group. Known and unknown long-term effects and complications of COVID-19 are still present, which is why it’s important for younger children to continue following safety guidelines.
“One complication of COVID infection that is specific to children is multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C,” Dr. Weston says. MIS-C is a combination of inflammation to different parts of the body that is life-threatening. “While we still don’t completely understand why children get less sick in the short term if they contract COVID, more worrisome is our lack of understanding of the long-term effects of COVID infection that may be more detrimental to their future health,” Dr. Weston explains.
As the summer weather approaches, outdoor activities, particularly with physical distancing, make COVID-19 transmission less likely due to the open-air environments. When indoors, unvaccinated children should follow CDC guidelines and continue to universally wear masks. There is a vaccine in development for young children, so these precautions won’t remain forever, but in the meantime following the typical COVID-19 protocols is the best thing for children to do now to preserve their health until the vaccine is available.
